Story & Ingredients
The story
The origins of Cosmopolitan are not entirely clear. According to several trade journals, there are at least three people who claim to have created the Cosmo. The most famous theory is that it was created in Miami in the 80s by martini queen Cheryl Cook. Most guests ordered the classic martini just to be in keeping with the style of the times and to be seen with a martini glass in hand. So she decided to modify the classic martini and sweeten it with cranberry juice instead of lime juice, making it more appealing both visually and taste-wise.

Everything about the Cosmopolitan
The Cosmopolitan, also known as “Cosmo,” is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and lime juice. Its sweet and sour taste and typical pink color make it a distinctive cocktail that had its origin in the 90s. Cosmo was a drink that suited its zeitgeist and quickly became a modern classic. The exact story of its origin is disputed, but those who popularized it are at least as interesting as the invention story itself.
An important role in the spread of the Cosmopolitan was played by the television series “Sex and the City,” in which it became the signature cocktail of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw. But before it was popular on television, it was already popular in a number of different varieties and social circles, from the gay community in Provincetown to the celebrity regulars at the Odeon, a restaurant in lower Manhattan that was responsible for its circulation. Eventually, the Cosmo was picked up by spirits manufacturers, further increasing its popularity.
The Cosmopolitan, also known as “Cosmo,” is a vodka cocktail that consists of four ingredients: Vodka, Triple Sec, cranberry juice and lime juice. The cocktail has a striking pink color and a sweet and sour flavor profile that makes it a popular drink for many people.
Originally invented in the 1930s, the Cosmopolitan did not experience a revival until the 1990s. An important factor in its rediscovery was the role it played in the television series “Sex and the City,” in which it was the signature drink of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw.
The Cosmopolitan has been adapted by many different groups and social circles, from the gay community in Provincetown to upscale restaurants in Manhattan. The popularity of the cocktail led to it being featured on many menus around the world, as well as being promoted by spirits manufacturers.
The ingredients of the Cosmopolitan make it a simple cocktail that can be easily prepared at home. To mix a Cosmo, you need 4.5 cl vodka, 1.5 cl Triple Sec, 1.5 cl cranberry juice and 1.5 cl lime juice. Mix the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and then strain into a chilled martini glass. A garnish of a slice of lime or an orange peel completes the cocktail.
Although the Cosmopolitan is considered a classic these days, still found on many menus, it struck a cultural chord in the 1990s, becoming an iconic cocktail closely associated with the fashion and pop culture of the time.
Vodka is a clear spirit made from various raw materials. Generally, vodka is made from grains such as wheat, rye or barley. However, it can also be made from potatoes, grapes, corn or even sugar cane molasses. The raw materials are first fermented to produce alcohol, which is then distilled to obtain the clear and colorless vodka.
Vodka is one of the most consumed spirits in the world. It is popular in many different countries and is consumed in a variety of ways. In countries like Russia and Poland, where vodka is often considered the national drink, it is often enjoyed neat or in small quantities. In other parts of the world, vodka is often used in cocktails or mixed with other drinks to create a drink with a higher alcohol content.
Vodka usually has an alcohol content between 35% and 50%, although some varieties may have a higher alcohol content. It has a neutral taste and smell, which makes it a versatile spirit that can be used in many different drinks. Vodka also has the advantage of mixing well with other flavors, making it a popular choice for cocktail recipes.
In the past, vodka was also used as a medicine to relieve pain and used as an antiseptic. In modern times, however, vodka is often consumed purely for pleasure. It is a popular drink at parties and events and is often served in clubs and bars.
There are many different types of vodka on the market, which can differ in taste and quality. Some vodkas are distilled multiple times for a smoother taste, while other vodkas may be made from organically grown raw materials. Some varieties can also be infused with different flavors such as fruits or herbs to change the taste.
In general, vodka is an alcoholic beverage that has a long history and is popular around the world. It is a versatile spirit that can be used in many different drinks and blends well with different flavors. Although it can be enjoyed in moderate amounts, as with all alcohol products, vodka should be consumed in moderation to maintain health and well-being.
As with our Espresso Martini, we opted for the vodka from the Freihof distillery. Freihof has been distilling since 1885 in the fifth generation. The production of exquisite fruit brandies, spirits, specialties and various liqueurs is not only the profession of master distillers, but also the vocation of the distillery from Lustenau in Austria. From the selection of the best natural raw materials to the bottling of the treasures, perfection is always considered the top maxim of the house. This makes the traditional company the benchmark of Austrian distilling art and ranks among the absolute top of the craft.
Triple Sec
Triple sec is an alcoholic liqueur often used in cocktails and other drinks. It has a sweet taste and aroma of orange peel, which comes from the use of bitter orange oil in its production. Triple sec is typically used as an ingredient in many classic cocktails such as the Margarita, Sidecar and Cosmopolitan.
The name “Triple sec” derives from the triple distillation of orange peel used in the liqueur. Although triple sec is known as an orange liqueur, there is actually no standard recipe for it. Some triple secs are made from a clear distillate, while others may have a golden or brown color that results from the addition of caramel.
The alcohol content of triple sec varies depending on the brand and production method. However, it generally has an alcohol content between 15% and 40%. The most popular triple sec, Cointreau, has an alcohol content of 40%.
Triple sec is also often used as a substitute for other orange liqueurs such as Grand Marnier or Curacao. Although these liqueurs can taste similar, they differ in how they are made and in their specific flavor profiles.
Overall, triple sec is a versatile liqueur that is used in many popular cocktails and is often used to enhance desserts or flavor sauces.
A key ingredient in Ardent BATCH’s Cosmopolitan cocktail is the cranberry sour mix, which is a blend of cranberries, limes and demerara sugar. Originally from North America, the cranberry is now grown all over the world, including Europe, Asia and America. Annual production is about 660,000 tons and the USA, Canada and Chile are among the main growing countries. The berry belongs to the family of blueberries and has a diameter of about one centimeter. Mostly it is processed into juice, while a small part is used as whole fruit. Lime, which is also included in the cranberry sour mix, is grown primarily in Mexico, Spain and Turkey, with annual production of about five million tons. Sugar is also needed to make the mix, which Ardent BATCH uses in the form of simple preserving sugar.
